You’ve probably seen many unique enclosures for the Raspberry Pi, however, Joe Farro’s steampunk project box may be the most ambitious yet. His device comes in a the form of a “book box,” which when stacked on a shelf next to normal tomes doesn’t draw much attention. Once pulled off of the shelf however, it becomes obvious that this is something special, with a variety of switches and ports sticking out of the pages, along with a window into the hollow “book” containing several gears that move when powered.

Opening the book reveals a variety of steampunk decorations, hiding a Raspberry Pi in one corner, along with RGB LED lighting — controlled with the help of an Arduino Micro — disguised as something that an inventor of the 1800s might have come up with. Besides being a fun decoration, the device is quite functional in the modern world. When plugged into an external monitor via the exposed HDMI port, it becomes a retro gaming console, complete with a steampunk-themed user interface.

If you’d like to make your own, instructions can be found here. As noted, the write-up is more of a guide than a rulebook, so hopefully others can build on this unique creation. Be sure to check it out in the video below!
