Smarten Up Your Spigot with SONOFF’s Zigbee Irrigation System
Extend your smart home outdoors with the $42 SONOFF Hydro DUO, a dual-zone Zigbee irrigation system that keeps your grass green.
So, you think you’ve got a complete home automation setup, do you? If you already have a smart thermostat, motion detectors, smart lighting, Wi-Fi door locks, and security cameras, you’ve certainly built a solid foundation. But have you considered automating anything beyond the walls of your home? If you haven't, smart irrigation is well worth checking into. An intelligent watering plan can keep your grass green all summer without wasting water or money.
If you’d like to dip your toes into smart irrigation, the SONOFF Hydro DUO Dual-Channel Zigbee Smart Water Valve With Flow Meter is a great place to start. It only costs about $42, yet it allows you to manage two independent irrigation zones through your existing smart home setup. Installation couldn’t be much easier. It attaches to a standard hose bibb on one end, and the other side has a pair of outlets that any hose can attach to.
The device is powered by a Telink TLSR8258 multiprotocol microcontroller supporting Zigbee 3.0 and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity. That dual-wireless setup allows the Hydro DUO to function in two different ways. Users with a Zigbee gateway can integrate it into larger smart home ecosystems such as Home Assistant, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, or Apple Home. Meanwhile, Bluetooth proximity mode still enables local control directly from a smartphone even without a hub installed nearby.
Rather than simply activating water for a fixed duration, the Hydro DUO can measure how much water actually flows through each zone. Users can monitor water consumption over time, download up to six months of historical data, and configure fail-safe shutoff limits in case a hose bursts or water pressure suddenly drops.
SONOFF also packed in several protective features designed specifically for outdoor use. The system can issue alerts for freezing temperatures, water shortages, low battery levels, and leaks. A child-lock mode disables the physical buttons on the device to prevent accidental activation, while weather-aware watering delays can automatically pause irrigation schedules when rain or severe weather is expected.
Power comes from either four AA batteries, which SONOFF claims can last roughly a year, or a USB Type-C connection — if for some reason you happen to have a USB port next to your outdoor faucet. With its IP65-rated enclosure and support for dual-zone irrigation, the Hydro DUO offers a very capable smart watering platform at an entry-level price point.
