Depending on your interests, there are many versions of Monopoly available — featuring, for example, your favorite TV show, sports team, or hometown. Few, however, can hold an LED-candle to Charles Ledford’s Skyrim board. The board top is made out of anodized aluminum, laser-etched to note locations like Black Reach, Fort Greenwall, and even “Hey, Wait, I Know You” for the infamous “Go to Jail” board location. Clear epoxy is applied on top to protect the surface, while allowing full visibility of the markings below.
This would be impressive in and of itself, but the play surface is elevated with a wooden frame, providing room inside for an Arduino Uno along with programmable LED strips. These strips are programmed to progressively light up white, then shine in the colors of the traditional monopoly properties. This enables you to see that yes, you do owe 240 gold for landing on Dawnstar, or 400 for Windhelm. Battery power and a wall plug are provided in order to not interrupt gaming sessions.
To complement the board, custom characters are 3D-printed, along with coin-currency, as well as farms and castles that substitute for houses and hotels. Finally, a new set of playing cards was designed in GIMP, then printed and laminated to complete your Skyrim-inspired march towards riches or bankruptcy!
