Sigma Gamma Labs' Horizon ODB-II Interface Module Brings the Teensy 3.6 and Bluetooth to Your Car
Built around the Teensy 3.6 with a Bluetooth module, and optional second BT or BLE radio, SGL's design offers Arduino IDE compatibility.
Sigma Gamma Labs has launched an Arduino-compatible ODB-II Interface Module, built around the Teensy 3.6 microcontroller and boasting Bluetooth and optional Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity.
"The Horizon OBD-Interface Module is a freely programmable and universal electronic device, which can be used in the automotive field," Sigma Gamma Labs writes of its design. "It e.g. can be directly attached to OBD-II Standard Interface, supporting CAN bus communication but a implementation to another CAN bus can also be supported with appropriate wiring harness.
"The module can be programmed and flashed over USB-Interface with Micro-USB connector and standard Arduino IDE will be used for this purpose. The module can be extended with second Bluetooth and Bluetooth LE adapters, that directly can be soldered on the PCB. One Bluetooth Module for Bluetooth 4.0 is already assembled."
The board comes configured for CAN communication up to 1Mb/s, supports the measurement of battery and KL15 voltage readings, has read-out and command transmission modes, and can serve as a communications gateway between USB, Bluetooth, and CAN β including dual-Bluetooth connectivity in either Bluetooth 4.0 or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) modes, with the addition of a second radio module. A microSD slot is provided for local data logging.
"An example software project will be delivered as a showcase and can be freely changed and adapted," Sigma Gamma Labs continues. "The software program can read out RPM, ETH, LOAD and SPEED from OBD2 interface and provides existing data over USB and Bluetooth 4.0 interface."
The module is now available from the Sigma Gamma Labs Tindie store, priced at $160; more information is available on the company's website, and the example Arduino sketch pre-loaded on the board can be found on the company's GitHub repository under an unspecified license.
