Today, if you want to build an old-school gaming system to relive classics from the ‘80s or ‘90s, you need a decent amount of technical expertise. For most Hacksters, this may be part of the fun, but if you just want to play the games, now there is a solution with the “RetroEngine Sigma.”
This palm-sized console hooks up to a modern TV with an HDMI port, and allows you to emulate a myriad of systems, including the NES, Sega Genesis, Playstation, and many others. Additionally, it can act as a media center and interact with both modern and retro-style controllers through USB, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth.
The system ships to you as a fully-configured, network-enabled computer and media-player preloaded with several branded games, the Armbian OS with the XFCE desktop, Kodi Mediacenter, as well as a one-click installer that lets you easily configure Wi-Fi access via your smartphone, tablet or PC. It can even guide you through the optional download and installation of additional software. In terms of hardware, the unit is based on an Allwinner H3 quad-core Cortex-A7 CPU with a Mali-400 GPU.
If the RetroEngine Sigma, at under $100 for various options, seems like a good deal, you’re not alone. With a month left on its Indiegogo campaign, it’s already over 700% funded!
