To capture the retro fun of Pong, while adding the ability to play with up to four people, creator Bradley Slattery has developed RetroBall — now on Kickstarter.
Powered by a PIC18F46K22 MCU, the build-it-yourself kit comes with a 64 x 64 LED matrix and a base to accomodate components including four potentiometers that each player can use to control his or her virtual paddle.
The main game is a variant of Pong, in which all four walls can be active. While extremely colorful, the relatively low resolution of the matrix keeps things delightfully “pixely.”
Though RetroBall must be assembled using a soldering iron, screwdriver, and pliers, setup is relatively simple, within the reach of even newcomers to electronics. For more advanced Makers, there’s a slot for you to plug in an Arduino Uno or compatible development board, allowing you to implement your own custom code on this device!
