Rest Your Glass of Bantha Milk on This Docking Bay Coffee Table
Augmented with LEDs and IR remote control, Erv Plecter's Millennium Falcon model looks right at home in its new hangar.
Erv Plecter has a 2010 Hasbro Millennium Falcon model, which measures in a gigantic 80 x 60cm (31 x 24in if that’s easier for you to visualize). He needed a place to put this amazing monstrosity, and where better than inside of a coffee table in his home cinema room? He first sourced a 1m x 1m square table with a glass top that the craft could fit inside, and while it was a nice piece of furniture, you really can’t just order something like this that does the Falcon justice.
So he set to work, first enclosing the table with teak sheets of wood to keep out dust. From there, it became obvious that the Falcon would look odd in a wooden hangar, and so began a journey that would convert a somewhat interesting toy and table, into something truly fantastic.
For this transformation, the walls were first coated with space wall panels, along with black PVC for the floor. He added backlighting with EL panels, creating a scene in which you expect Vader to start striding across. Programmable LED strips are also used to give the docking bay extra ambiance.
The Falcon was heavily augmented as well, with LEDs for the engines that looks incredible, fiber optics for the cockpit, and more. The system can even play back sound clips from the movie with coordinated lighting thanks to an onboard Teensy 3.5. This takes care of IR signalling duties, allowing the setup to be controlled with the same remote as the existing AV receiver.
