It’s a rapidly evolving space with little real-world user adoption, so it’s still too early to tell if desktop AI companions will catch on with consumers. Judging by its announcement at this year’s CES, Razer seems to think they will. It has created Project AVA, which is a lifelike, animated 5.5-inch 3D hologram that sits on a desk and handles all of the tasks an AI assistant typically does, but with a lot more personality.

Project AVA is designed to function as a constant presence rather than a tool you summon only when needed. Rendered as a small holographic character, AVA uses a built-in HD camera and microphone array to maintain contextual awareness of its surroundings. Razer describes the experience as a “Friend for Life,” positioning the device somewhere between a productivity assistant, lifestyle organizer, and gaming companion.

AVA can manage everyday tasks like organizing calendars, helping decide what to wear, or suggesting dinner plans. It also expands into wellness, tracking habits and moods while offering personalized motivation and reminders to encourage healthier routines. For professional use, AVA supports creative brainstorming through natural conversation and can quickly analyze documents or spreadsheets, summarizing key trends and insights on demand. Real-time translation is also supported, enabling both text and two-way spoken conversations across multiple languages.

Gaming is where Razer really expects Project AVA to stand out. The assistant can act as a live strategy advisor, identifying opponent weaknesses or offering puzzle solutions in real time. It can also serve as an in-game knowledge base, pulling up lore details, item statistics, or character backstories without forcing players to pause their session. Beyond raw information, AVA is designed to behave like a true gaming wingman, offering hype during victories and encouragement after losses.

Razer plans to offer multiple companion personalities beyond the default AVA. These include KIRA, a cheerful gaming partner; ZANE, a calm and tactical strategist; FAKER, modeled after the esports legend; and SAO, an idol-inspired avatar meant to foster a more emotional connection. Users will be able to swap these 3D holographic avatars as they see fit.

Currently powered by xAI’s Grok engine, Project AVA is built with an architecture that could support additional AI platforms in the future. Razer expects the device to launch in the second half of 2026, with US reservations available now for a refundable $20 deposit.
