Raspberry Pi Shrinks the Touch Display 2, Launching a More Compact 5" Model

New, more compact variant matches the resolution of the 7" model — meaning a boost in pixel density.

Raspberry Pi has announced the launch of its second second-generation Touch Display, this time shrinking the visible screen size down to 5" — while keeping the same 720×1280 resolution as its 7" sibling, for boosted pixel density.

"Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 is a multi-touch portrait panel for Raspberry Pi," the company says of its latest hardware launch. "Ideal for interactive projects such as tablets, entertainment systems, and information dashboards, it is [now] available in 5-inch and 7-inch variants to suit a wide range of applications and end-device form factors."

The first in the Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 family launched back in November last year, and features a 720×1280 24-bit full-color panel with capacitive touch support — all driven over the MIPI Display Serial Interface (DSI) connection of any model of Raspberry Pi single-board computer from the first Model B+ onward bar the DSI-less Raspberry Pi Zero, with power supplied via the general-purpose input/output (GPIO) header.

The new model launching today is, effectively, exactly the same thing, with exactly the same resolution, feature set, and connectivity — but in a more compact size. The 7" display has been replaced with a 5" version, maintaining the same 720×1280 resolution but in a smaller space for a boost in pixel density.

That does come at a small cost, though: the viewing angle is marginally reduced, down to 80 degrees from the 85 degrees of the larger model. As before, there's an anti-glare coating and support for five-finger simultaneous touch using the drivers already built in to Raspberry Pi OS.

The Raspberry Pi Touch Display 2 5" is now available at resellers, priced at $40; the larger 7" version remains on sale at $60.
