Raspberry Pi Partners with Sharp for the CM5-Powered Raspberry Pi Smart Display Module
New board conforms to Intel's SDM specification for broad smart display compatibility and easy installation.
Raspberry Pi has announced an upcoming new device, built in partnership with Sharp Display Solutions Europe: the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5-powered Raspberry Pi Smart Display Module, an Intel SDM-format device for digital signage.
"The Raspberry Pi Smart Display Module enables users in the audio-visual and digital signage markets to integrate the power, flexibility, and energy efficiency of Compute Module 5 into compatible display screens, with no external media player, cabling, or power source required," says Raspberry Pi's Simon Burgess of the upcoming device. "The module also provides HDMI output to support a second independent video stream, along with an M.2 expansion slot for optional AI acceleration."
Built around the Raspberry Pi Compute Module 5, the computer-on-module variant of the Raspberry Pi 5 single-board computer powered by the same Broadcom BCM2712 system-on-chip, exact specifications of the Raspberry Pi Smart Display Module will depend on which variant of CM5 is fitted — but all include battery-backed real-time clock, an M.2 expansion slot compatible with Non-Volatile Memory Express (NVMe) storage, USB Type-C and Type-A ports, and wired Ethernet, along with optional Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios.
The boards are designed for use with device conforming to Intel's Smart Display Module (SDM) standard — which means they slide into an industry-standard slot and draw power directly from the display. "We designed the Raspberry Pi Smart Display Module to be as straightforward to assemble as possible," Burgess says, "[and] customers can install it themselves without any specialist tools."
No launch date nor pricing have been announced for the Raspberry Pi Smart Display Module, but live demos of the board will be available on Sharp's booth at the Integrated Systems Europe (ISE) 2026 conference in Barcelona on February 3rd-6th this year.
