Quectel Announces the EG800Q-NA LTE Cat. 1 bis IoT Cellular Module, with 10Mbps Throughput

Previously unavailable in bands suitable for North American use, the EG800Q series will soon come in a -NA flavor.

Internet of Thing (IoT) specialist Quectel Wireless Solutions has announced the Quectel EG800Q-NA — bringing its existing LTE Cat. 1 bis cellular module to North America, offering up to 10Mbps throughput and support for operating with just one antenna.

"We're thrilled to introduce the EG800Q-NA module to our customers in North America," says Quectel president and chief sales officer Norbert Muhrer of the company's latest launch. "As one of the pioneering modules built upon the Qualcomm QCX216 LTE IoT Modem, it perfectly caters to a wide range of mid-range applications and deployment scenarios where dependable and economical communication solutions are essential."

The Quectel EG800Q-NA module matches the format of its international predecessors, measuring 17.7×15.8×2.4mm (around 0.7×0.6×0.1") in a land-grid array (LGA) package. Designed for deployment in even extreme conditions, the module is rated for a claimed -40°C to +85°C (-40°C to 185°F) operating temperature range — and delivers up to 10Mbps downstream and 5Mbps upstream throughput using a 3GPP Rel-14 LTE Cat. 1 bis connection.

The part also comes with support for Dynamic Firmware Over-The-Air (DFOTA) updates, Wi-Fi Scan positioning, and peripheral connectivity including USB 2.0, UART, I2C, PCM, and USIM. Quectel claims the part is ideal for "high-performing IoT applications" including smart meters, asset tracking systems, parking meters, and home automation, while support for using a single antenna helps keep down the bulk and lower the overall bill of material.

Anyone looking to pick the module up, though, will need to wait a little while: the company has begun certification with the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and "leading US [cellular network] operators," but the process is not yet complete.

More information on the EG800Q series of LTE Cat. 1 bis modules is available on the Quectel website.
