Creating your own game console can be something of a rite of passage for experienced hackers, with a well-equipped workshop and a variety of specialized knowledge. Going from zero to this kind of ability can take years, and some certainly get discouraged before they reach that point. For a much easier way to make your own console, consider the Creoqode’s PYXA instead.
This console serves as an easy intro into the world of DIY gaming, and features everything you need to assemble the tiny device, without tools, special skills, or soldering — though four hex screws make me wonder if there will be an included hex key. Once built, you can program its ATmega328P processor using the Arduino IDE, either developing new games from scratch, or uploading games that Creoqode has already made for it.
While it looks educational and fun to set up, the PYXA also looks quite fun to play. Its layout resembles a mini Game Gear, but with a rechargeable battery that gives you four hours of play (a feature that would have been welcome when that gadget was in its heyday). Notably, the screen has a portrait-mode orientation, making it ideal for games like Tetris or various space-shooters, along with a buzzer to help pull you into the game world. Consoles are available at a ~$64 pledge level, with delivery slated for June.
