The Sega Genesis, released in North America in 1989, had a great catalog of games released over the years. But, as many games as there were, more would always be better. To make that happen, Imgurian BadWolfman put a Raspberry Pi inside of a Sega Genesis that allows him to play games from multiple other consoles as well.
He started with a Raspberry Pi 3 with RetroPie installed. That lets him emulate games from 8-bit and 16-bit consoles (like the Genesis), as well the N64, PlayStation, and Dreamcast. He fit the Pi inside of the shell of a Sega Genesis Model 2. Because he wasn’t planning on using any of the Sega’s original electronics, they were all removed.
With those removed, the case itself was lightly modified to provide access to ports for HDMI, Ethernet, and power, along with a 4-port USB hub. All of that was mounted inside of the Genesis case with 3D-printed brackets. The result is a clean, if not completely original, Genesis that can be used to play games from a variety of consoles. And, four Logitech F310 gamepads make it perfect for multiplayer action.
