Posti Light Is the Perfect Device for Displaying Your Pixel Art

If you enjoy creating pixel art, or even just like looking at it, the Posti Light is a great way to show it.

The massive popularity of retrogaming has led to an entire genre of retro-styled video games, and with that a very specific style of art. While there are many defining characteristics of retro games — all of which were a result of the constraints inherent with early hardware — the low-resolution graphics are probably the most obvious. When your entire screen is just 256 by 240 pixels, as with the NES, you better be great at making distinct graphics that fit into just a handful of pixels of a limited color palette. If you enjoy creating pixel art, or even just like looking at it, the Posti Light is for you.

Posti Light is launching through Kickstarter, and the campaign has just nine days left until it’s finished. So far, 126 backers have pledged nearly $30,000, which is about three times the funding goal. Each Posti Light contains two 16x16 grids of pixels — one on the front and one on the back. Each of the pixels in those grids can be set to one of 16 million colors, which should be more than enough to perfectly replicate any pixel art. That art can be static pixel art, animated sprites, scrolling text, or any number of animations. You can use one of your own designs, or one of the hundreds available in the royalty-free library.

Each Posti Light measures about 16 x 16 inches, and can be mounted on a wall or set on a desk or table with the optional wood base. The design is minimalist and unobtrusive when the device is turned off, so your art will stand out when it is being displayed. The various settings can be configured through a smartphone companion app, which connects via Bluetooth. You’ll also use that app to upload your pixel art. An optional microphone accessory facilitates sound reactivity. Posti Light is open source, so you’re free to modify things however you like.

If you want a Posti Light for your home, the Kickstarter campaign will be running until March 27th. Early birds can get a single Posti Light (without either accessory) for about $189. Rewards are expected to be delivered in November.
