Pimoroni's Enviro+ FeatherWing Brings All-in-One Environmental Monitoring to CircuitPython

Created in collaboration with the University of Sheffield, the Enviro+ FeatherWing is now available alongside the Raspberry Pi HAT variant.

Pimoroni has launched a FeatherWing add-on designed for those looking at easy all-in-one environmental monitoring: the Enviro+ FeatherWing, a variant of its earlier Enviro+ HAT for the Raspberry Pi.

"Enviro+ FeatherWing is no larger than a couple of pound coins side-by-side, but it's absolutely jam-packed with sensors," Pimoroni writes of its latest launch. "It has all the great features of the larger Enviro+ for Raspberry Pi β€” a weather sensor, light sensor, microphone, gas and particulate sensing*, and a gorgeous, color LCD β€” but it's built for Adafruit's range of low-power Feather boards that run CircuitPython.

"Measure temperature, pressure, and humidity with the BME280 weather sensor; measure light level with the LTR-559 light and proximity sensor; detect a range of pollutant gases with the MICS6814 analogue gas sensor; measure ambient noise level with the analogue MEMS microphone."

The board's design includes all the aforementioned sensors, plus an on-board 0.96" color LCD display for live readouts; the board also includes a connector compatible with an optional particulate matter (PM) sensor for air quality sensing, with Pimoroni recommending the Plantower PMS5003.

"The analogue gas sensor can be used to make qualitative measurements of changes in gas concentrations," the company further notes, "so you can tell broadly if the three groups of gases are increasing or decreasing in abundance. Without laboratory conditions or calibration, you won't be able to say 'the concentration of carbon monoxide is n parts per million,' for example."

Developed in partnership with the University of Sheffield, the Enviro+ FeatherWing β€” like the HAT before it β€” can be used for standalone projects or integrated into open data projects, including Luftdaten. A CircuitPython library for the add-on is available, along with detailed documentation and examples.

More information is available on the Pimoroni website, where the Enviro+ FeatherWing is available to buy for Β£45/$46.13.
