Commonly-used wireless technologies like traditional Wi-Fi generally work very well, and there’s a good chance you’re using that particular method to read this right now! On the other hand, Wi-Fi’s range is limited, and you may want to experiment with other data transmission methods.

If you would like to do your own low-level wireless experiements, Pidgeon 1 is a sub-GHz radio with 500 mW transmission power which integrates an STM32F0 microcontroller, allowing it to be fully programmable. The device can act as a virtual COM port on Windows, Linux, and Mac systems, and features RS485 networking in the form of a small USB stick.

Radio functionality is provided by a CC1120 transceiver with a CC1190 front-end that can operate in the 868MHz or 915Mhz band. Perhaps most excitingly, Pidgeon 1 is capable of reaching 500 meters in line-of-sight using a quarter-wave wire antenna, giving it long-range sensing and control capabilities.
