Olimex's Open Source OLIMEXINO-STM32F3 Handles Simultaneous USB, CAN Bus Communication

A shift to the new STM32 F3 series increases available flash and RAM, allows for USB and CAN bus operation simultaneously, and more.

Bulgarian open source hardware specialist Olimex has launched a new STMicroelectronics STM32-based development board, built around the Arduino Uno form factor, which offers simultaneous USB and CAN bus operation: the OLIMEXINO-STM32F3.

"OLIMEXINO-STM32F3 is re-design of our popular OLIMEXINO-STM32 board," Olimex explains. "What is new? [The] STM32F303RCT6TR is used which allow CAN and USB to work at the same time. The F1 Series of STM32 shared same buffer for both USB and CAN which leads to not be able to work with both CAN and USB at the same time. This is solved in F3 series."

The move also brings with it an increase in available program memory, upping the storage to 256kB of flash memory and 40kB of RAM. At the same time Olimex has taken the opportunity to broaden the voltages the power input will accept: Now compatible with anything from 4.2VDC to 40VDC, the redesigned board can work in automotive applications without special power adapters — and comes with an industrial temperature rating of -40°C to +85°C (around -40°F to 185°F.)

The updated design also includes a battery holder for a CR2032 lithium battery to power the on-board real-time clock, and a cost reduction that sees the board selling for €14.95 in single quantities and as little as €11.96 in volumes of 50 boards or more.
