Olimex BB-ADS1262 Offers 10-Channel Low-Noise Low-Drive 32-bit ADC on an OSHW Breakout Board

With 10 channels of 32-bit analog-to-digital conversion, Olimex's latest board is a great add-on for microcontrollers.

Bulgarian open source specialist Olimex has announced the launch of a new design, offering 10 channels of 32-bit analog-to-digital conversion (ADC) in a certified Open Source Hardware-compliant design.

"The BB-ADS1262 is breakout board for the ADS1262 low-noise, low-drift 38.4-kSPS, delta-sigma (ΔΣ) ADCs with an integrated PGA [Programmable Gain Amplifier], reference, and internal fault monitors," Olimex writes of its latest design. "Possible applications are sensor reading, small signals (ECG/EEG), weigh scales, strain-gauge sensors, thermocouples, and resistance temperature devices (RTD)."

Built around Texas Instruments' ADS1262 ADC chip, the board offers 32-bit precision with data rates selectable from 2.5 samples per second through to 38,400 samples per second. The design is built for high accuracy and stability, with an offset drift of 1 nV/°C, 3 parts per million (PPM) linearity, and a noise level of 7 nVRMS based on 2.5 samples per second with the gain set to 32.

As with all Olimex designs, the BB-ADS1262 is Open Source Hardware as per the OSHW definition, licensed under the CERN Open Hardware License 2.0 (CERN-OHL-2.0); the software is published under the GNU General Public License 3, including an example for using the board with an Arduino microcontroller, and the documentation under a Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike 3.0 license.

The board is now available from the Olimex shop, priced at €25.95 (around $28) before volume discounts; the source code and hardware files, meanwhile, have been published to the Olimex GitHub repository.
