If you’re an avid runner or cyclist, you may use a heart rate monitor to ensure that your exertion level is in the proper range. Taking this one step further is the HeartyPatch, an open source ECG patch that measures the electrical activity of the heart in a compact housing.

HeartyPatch is an open source, IoT-connected ECG patch that can accurately monitor RR intervals and heart rate variability.

The wearable device — now available on Crowd Supply — sticks to one’s chest with standard disposable electrode pads, and can transmit data about one’s heartbeat over BLE or Wi-Fi for analysis.

The 3D-printed clam-shell enclosure allows for comfortable long-term use.

The HeartyPatch is based on an ESP32 module along with Maxim’s MAX30003 single-lead ECG monitoring chip, and powered by a rechargeable 450mAh LiPo battery. The included GUI is written is Processing, and like the hardware, is open to modification as needed.

On the surface, the health and training potential of the HeartyPatch seems quite interesting, and with its open source design, hopefully we’ll see it become even more useful!
