Kothe Son started designing a display for the New York City subway system, before changing it to the London Underground. After further consideration, he finally decided to make one for his own city of Valencia, Spain. The device enables its user to input the start and destination of a journey, then maps out the route in dots of light along with audio output.

After start/destination entry, the interactive map lights up the origin and destination in green, transfers in blue, and the path in red, illustrating the steps you’ll need to go through to get where you’re going. It then speaks the origin and destination, as well as approximate journey time. After hitting “next," it shows and speaks the directions on a touchscreen located in the lower right corner. A final display also allows you to “buy” a ticket with a QR code, though this appears to simply take you to a predetermined website on your phone.

The setup is powered by a Mega 2560 Pro Mini board and user input is handled by a Nextion NX4827K043 4.3" HMI TFT module. Audio directions are pre-recorded using Snap4Arduino software and played back as MP3 clips to simulate the “choppy voice of an artificial intelligence.”

The build write-up includes details on creating the background map, as well as how WS2812B LEDs were hooked up with fiber optics for display.
