Inspired by a member of his photo and film club with cerebral palsy, Tadej Strah decided to make a gimbal to automatically keep a small camera level.

Interesting mechanical elements of this build include a handle normally used for an angle grinder, and two hobby servos mounted on bent pieces of metal to control the leveling axes. Motion sensing is accomplished via an MPY-6050 sensor, and an Arduino Mega provides processing power for the assembly.

You can see it at 2:30 in the video here rotating around in the mirror on its own or at 3:10 on a ski slope. Though it’s not yet perfect, Strah’s goal was to keep things both simply and inexpensively. It’s a really neat accomplishment, especially considering he estimates it could be constructed for around $60.
