M5Stack's StopWatch Dev Kit Delivers an Espressif ESP32-S3R8 in a Multi-Function Watch Form Factor

Pocketwatch-like device includes IMU, RTC, and even a microphone and speaker, all crammed behind a 1.75" AMOLED touchscreen.

Embedded and hobbyist electronics specialist M5Stack has announced the StopWatch Dev Kit, which puts an Espressif ESP32-S3R8 microcontroller behind a circular full-color AMOLED display — complete with battery for use on-the-go.

"StopWatch is a round AMOLED touch development board designed for portable and interactive scenarios," M5Stack explains of the device. "Together with the M5PM1 multi-level power management system and a 450mAh battery, it can meet diverse development needs such as portable smart control, wearable human-machine interaction, and lightweight IoT [Internet of Things] terminals. Applications [include] portable smart devices, electronic badges, [and] lightweight IoT terminals."

The compact StopWatch — which, as the name suggests, looks a lot like a posh sports stopwatch — is built around Espressif's ESP32-S3R8, an older member of the ESP32 family that includes two 32-bit Tensilica Xtensa LX7 cores running at up to 240MHz. The module also includes 8MB of pseudo-static RAM (PSRAM) to expand the on-die SRAM, and 16MB of program flash. There's single-band 2.4GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connectivity — though as M5Stack's spec sheet for the StopWatch doesn't mention BLE, this is perhaps not supported in firmware.

The microcontroller is positioned in a custom case behind a 1.75" circular AMOLED touchscreen display, flanked by two user-definable push-button switches and a single dedicated power button. There's a 480mAh battery with M5PM1 power management system, an RX8130CE real-time clock (RTC), MEMS microphone and audio codec with built-in amplified speaker, a haptic vibration motor, and a Bosh Sensortec BMI270 six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU). If that's not enough, there's a HY2.0-4P expansion interface plus two rear expansion headers for additional hardware.

The M5Stack StopWatch Dev Kit is now available to order on the company store, at $45.
