Above all, wearable electronics should be comfortable and discreet. If the wearer can forget the device is there at all, they are much more likely to actually use it — bulky, cumbersome hardware tends to get left on the nightstand before long. This is a problem for wearables that monitor health, in particular. To get an accurate picture of the wearer’s health over time, continuous, long-term data collection is absolutely essential.

For those who wear earrings, a new device called Lumia 2 may be the perfect wearable health monitoring platform. Lumia 2 looks and feels like a standard earring, yet it is capable of continuously monitoring over 20 health metrics. Despite the tiny size, the battery lasts over a week on a single charge, so you can truly forget you are wearing an electronic device. Just put on your jewelry in the morning and you’re good to go.

Developed by Lumia Health, the device takes an unconventional approach by moving sensors away from the wrist and finger to a less commonly used location: the ear. According to the company, this positioning offers some technical advantages. The ear sits closer to major blood vessels and experiences far less motion than the wrist, resulting in cleaner, more stable signals. This allows Lumia 2 to capture more reliable measurements of heart rate, heart rate variability, blood oxygen, temperature, and even blood flow — an uncommon metric for consumer wearables.

The focus on blood flow stems from the company’s origins in medical research. The technology was initially developed in collaboration with researchers from leading universities to help monitor patients with circulatory issues. By bringing that capability into a consumer device, Lumia 2 aims to expand access to deeper physiological insights that have traditionally required clinical equipment.

Rather than forcing users to adapt to a single tech-centric form factor, Lumia 2 integrates into existing jewelry habits. The sensor sits behind the ear like a standard earring back and can be paired with studs, hoops, or cuffs. A feature called SwitchBack even allows it to attach to many existing earrings, preserving personal style while adding smart functionality.

Instead of requiring daily charging, the device uses a swappable battery system. Each battery lasts about seven days, and users can simply switch to a charged backup without interrupting data collection. This approach ensures continuous monitoring, particularly during sleep, when many other devices are typically removed.

The accompanying mobile app aggregates data into categories such as sleep, readiness, activity, and cycle tracking, offering long-term trend analysis. However, access to these insights requires a paid membership.

At the time of writing, Lumia 2 has blown past its $10,000 crowdfunding goal with over $1.1 million pledged so far. If you’d like to snag the device for yourself, rewards start at $279 on Kickstarter. Shipments are expected to go out in December 2026.
