Lifeclocc Is a Desktop Existential Crisis Machine

Need a little extra motivation not to waste time? Watch your life tick away on this DIY clock, which is now on Kickstarter.

Unless you’re a teenager, you’re probably acutely aware of the time that’s slipping away from you. The seconds you have left on your lunch break, the minutes you have left to finish your work today, and the years you have left to live — they’re all in the back of your mind at all times. Most of us try to ignore the ticking clock as much as possible in order to remain sane. But Lifeclocc is designed to put that existential crisis right on your desk at all times, and it’s launching through Kickstarter.

The Lifeclocc campaign recently launched on Kickstarter, and has far exceeded its modest $200 funding goal. So far, the campaign has 31 backers who are all likely masochists that want to use the power of time to motivate themselves. That’s because each Lifeclocc is a desk clock that counts down the time you have left to live. Of course, Lifeclocc doesn’t have any kind of built-in premonition capabilities. It assumes you’ll live to be 80-years-old and then counts down from there. Frankly, that seems a bit generous. But being more realistic would probably just add to the agony of watching your life tick away.

There are two kinds of Lifeclocc available: the Maker Edition and Days Edition. The black Maker Edition has 10 numerical digits that count how many seconds you have left. The white Days Edition gives you five digits for how many days you have left and six digits to tell you how many seconds are left in the current day. Both show that information on standard seven-segment LED displays. The Maker Edition is built around a Teensy++ 2.0, while the Days Edition has an Arduino Nano instead. Both can be reprogrammed if you want to add functionality, or — more mercifully — remove the life countdown functionality. Both come with 3D-printed stands for your desk, and are available in kit form if you prefer to build yours yourself.

If you want a Lifeclocc, the Kickstarter campaign will be running until February 29th. You can get either edition in DIY kit form for $39, or assembled for $60. Rewards are expected to be April for the Maker Edition, and May for the Days Edition.
