It’s usually bench power supplies, multimeters, soldering stations, and the like that get most of electronics hobbyists' attention when they are choosing new gear for their home lab. But if you think about it, the majority of us spend more of our time on a computer than we do with these tools. Whether we are designing PCBs or writing firmware, an awful lot of work takes place in the digital realm. So shouldn’t we give our computing rigs as much thought as we do our other tools?

That seems reasonable, and a good place to start is with the keyboard. After all, this is our primary way of interfacing with our machines. As such, it makes sense to select something that will make the experience as smooth and streamlined as possible. A new keyboard called the K1W from MiraBox may be a good option in this regard. It is a tenkeyless mechanical keyboard with built-in, programmable Stream Deck-like keys to boost productivity in digital design tools and beyond.

The K1W comes standard with six LCD-equipped keys that act as dynamic, visual shortcuts. Instead of relying on memorized key combinations or layered macros, each of these keys can display icons, animations, or text representing their function. This serves to eliminate guesswork and reduce cognitive load by showing users exactly what each button does in real time.

The keyboard can be configured through a browser-based interface, allowing users to assign macros, launch applications, or trigger multi-step workflows without installing dedicated software. Integration with Stream Deck-style tools and plugin libraries further expands its capabilities, making it suitable for streamers, developers, and designers alike.

The K1W aims to preserve the tactile experience that mechanical keyboard enthusiasts expect. MiraBox claims to have solved the challenge of embedding display hardware without compromising key feel, using a specialized sensor and display integration system. Combined with a gasket-mounted structure, internal sound dampening, and a silicone base, the keyboard is designed to deliver a quieter, more refined typing experience.

As far as connectivity is concerned, tri-mode operation is supported — via USB or wireless — giving users flexibility across different setups. The inclusion of customizable RGB lighting and hot-swappable switches adds appeal for those who like to fine-tune their gear.

If you would like to snag a K1W of your own, they are currently being offered on Kickstarter for $109. Shipping is set to begin in May 2026.
