Lattice Semiconductor has announced the release of their HM01B0 UPduino Shield — a development kit for dropping AI in devices through vision and sound sensory inputs. The company designed the package for engineers who want to develop always-on, low-power IoT devices. The kit is based on the UPduino 2.0 board, which connects to the Himax HM01B0 module in an Arduino form factor.

According to Lattice Product Marketing Manager Peiju Chiang, “The Upduino Shield development kit offers substantial flexibility to product developers by making the addition of vision-based AI support to IoT-connected devices quick and easy. And because the kit uses our low-power iCE UltraPlus FPGA, adding AI support to IoT products is possible without a significant increase in product power consumption, a key requirement for IoT devices operating at the network Edge.”

The HM01B0 development kit features an iCE40 UltraPlus FPGA-based UPduino board with 5.3K LUTs, 1Mb SPRAM, 120 Kb DPRAM, and 8X Multipliers. It also sports FTDI FT232H USB to SPI Device for FPGA programming, has a 12MHz crystal oscillator clock, and 34 GPIOs on o.1-inch headers. The Himax HM01B0 module packs a low-power image sensor, supports 30fps at 1.1mW, and has a pair of I2S microphones, and debugging LEDs.

Lattice Semiconductor has used the kit to produce several proof-of-concept demos that take advantage of the platform, including Human Presence Detection and Hand Gesture Detection, which allows the system to simplify and accelerate vision-based AI projects. The HM01B0 UPduino development kit is available now for $45 on Lattice’s product page.
