Kittenbot Meowbit: A Handheld Micro:bit-Based Codable Gaming Console

Kittenbot’s Meowbit is a tiny handheld gaming console that can fit in your pocket, and while it looks like a kids toy, it’s much more, as it is equipped with an STM32 MCU that can be programmed with MicroPython, KittenBlock, and MakeCode Arcade. The console also features the same edge connector and I/O rings as BBC’s Micro:bit, making it compatible with Micro:bit accessories, breakout boards, and matrix displays.

Under the hood, the Meowbit packs an STM32F401RET6 (Arm Cortex-M4) MCU with 2Mb of SPI Flash, and SD card slot to store programs or extend wireless modules. Additionally, it offers a 160 x 128 TFT full-color display, sensor suit (light, temperature, gyroscope), and a single micro USB port for power and programming. The Meowbit even includes a 40-pin Micro:bit connector, six programmable buttons, a power switch, a reset button, a buzzer, and a multiplayer connector.

As mentioned earlier, Meowbit can take advantage of several programming packages, allowing you to program your games, and is compatible with MacOS and Windows. Kittenbot is currently selling the Meowbit on their website for $39.90 (Seeed has it cheaper for $34.90) and comes with a silicone sleeve for protection. The company also provides the download links for their software tools, as well as tutorials on their GitHub page (mostly everything is in Chinese).

Kittenbot recommends purchasing Micro:bit’s RoboBit expansion board, as it offers everything needed to use the console for robotics projects- including 18650 battery holder, four-channel DC motor control, two-channel stepper motor control, eight-channel servo port, four RGB LEDs, mounting options for Lego Technics, power management chip, and a host of others.
