Standard quadcopter-style drones have grown so popular over the last decade or two that they’re now very inexpensive and easy to fly. They’re well-suited to aerial photography and videography, and sports like drone racing. But that ease-of-use means experienced pilots don’t have nearly as much fun as they used to. Now, a new device called MetaFly just launched on Kickstarter, and promises to make flying a “drone” fun again.

MetaFly isn’t a drone, at least not in the conventional sense, but that’s the closest comparison. Unlike a quadcopter which flies using a set of four spinning props, MetaFly flies more like a bat or butterfly. It’s built around principles of biomimetics, which is the art and science of artificially replicating natural systems found in plants and animals. In this case, that’s the flapping of wings in order to fly.

That unique method of flying makes MetaFly far more maneuverable than a traditional drone. It’s not nearly as fast in a straight line, but it can turn on a dime and flit around with ease which makes it ideal for indoor flight. It can reach speeds up to 11 mph (18 km/h), has a range of 320 feet (100 meters), can fly for up to 8 minutes, and only takes 12 minutes to charge. It’s piloted by an included remote control, and is designed for shock absorption so it won’t break if you crash it.

The MetaFly Kickstarter campaign is running until May 2nd, and has already reached half of its funding goal. If you want a MetaFly, you can get the early bird special for €69 (about $78 USD). The retail price will be €129. Rewards are expected to be delivered in September.
