Symmetra is a playable character in the game Overwatch, and she has the unique ability to place sentry turrets that reduce players’ movement speed. Those turrets are both useful and cool-looking, and so they’ve become pretty popular among Overwatch fans. If you’ve ever wanted your own turrets, you’re in luck: YouTuber Mr. Volt has a great guide on how to build your own.

These aren’t just mere models, because they actually shoot lasers! They’re constructed from a combination of 3D-printed parts (STL files are provided) and off-the-shelf components. Each turret is mounted on a servo so that it can be aimed, and has a 2W laser that’s capable of doing actual damage, such as popping a balloon. Warning: be careful with your lasers!

Mr. Volt used an Arduino Mega to control the servos and RGB LED accent lighting, and to switch the relays for the lasers. But, pretty much any microcontroller should do the job. His design also uses milled acrylic to diffuse the LED accent lighting, but you could probably get away with translucent 3D printed parts if you don’t have access to a CNC mill. The final result certainly looks good, and the real lasers are just the icing on the cake.
