Back in June of 2018, Hardkernel unveiled the ODROID-GO handheld gaming console to celebrate their 10th anniversary, which could emulate retro 8-bit games using a custom SM32-WROVER MCU. The console resembled Nintendo’s Game Boy and offered a 2.4-inch LCD and 0.5W mono speaker for playing games. As with any gaming console company, Hardkernel started developing a new version to replace the original earlier this year, and have recently released a successor: the ODROID-GO Advance.

The South Korean SBC designers' latest offering features a more powerful processor — Rockchip’s RK3326 MCU with a quad-core Arm Cortex-A35, Mali-G31 GPU, and 1Gb of DDR3L RAM. It also packs a larger 3.5-inch (320 x 480) TFT LCD, a headphone jack, a 0.5-inch speaker, and a LiPo 3.7V/3000mAh battery that Hardkernel claims can run for 10 hours of continuous gameplay. The ODROID-GO Advanced looks similar to a PSP and includes a myriad of buttons — D-pad, joystick, four action buttons (A, B, X, Y), and six function buttons.

The ODROID-GO Advanced is equipped with a USB 2.0 Host controller and one 10-pin port (I2C, GPIO, IRQ at 3.3V) for programming/debugging, and an SD card slot for hosting games. The console can take advantage of Ubuntu 18.04 64-bit, and Linux 4.4.189, along with a modified EmulationStation with Libretro.

The gaming platform can handle most emulators for your favorite consoles, including the Atari 2600/5200/7800/Lynx, Sega Game Gear, and Game Boy/Game Boy Advance/Game Boy Color. In addition, it can handle offerings for the Sega Master System, Mega Drive (Sega Genesis) Sega CD (Mega CD), Nintendo’s NES/Super NES, PSX, PSP, and NEC PC Engine (TurboGrafx-16) and PC Engine CD. Hardkernel is selling the ODROID-GO Advance for $55, which will be available at the end of January 2020.
