The Rubik’s cube hasn’t changed much since its invention back in 1974 by the Hungarian sculptor of the same name. The idea behind it is to turn each jumbled-up multi-colored face into a solid color on all six sides, which is easier said than done. That’s it though, once you’re done all you can do is jumble up the colors again and repeat the process.
GoCube is about to give that old 3D puzzle box a new life by injecting ‘smart’ technology into the puzzle platform with their cube of the same name. It’s a connected cube with added extra features for players of all levels, including instructional how-to’s, online competitions, overcoming missions, and stat-tracking.
The GoCube was designed with internal sensors to continuously track position and activity as well as an IMU to track position and orientation. A Bluetooth 5.0 wireless connection and accompanying app allows you to jump online and access the different gaming features mentioned earlier along with a VS mode and live competitions.
While I think the GoCube is a great idea for a new level of interaction beyond simple puzzle-solving, I still am only able to get maybe two or three sides completed using the traditional Rubik’s cube before I resort to moving the stickers. For those more daring than I, the GoCube is currently being funded on Kickstarter with pledges starting at $69 and up and have already surpassed their target goal by several thousand dollars with over a month left in the campaign.
