When it comes to technology, newer isn’t always better. Consider photography, for instance. A modern, high-end smartphone may technically take better pictures than any film-based camera of the past; however, there is still something to be said for those old, analog Canon and Nikon cameras. It is much harder to perfectly frame an image while gripping the awkward, thin rectangle of a phone that wasn’t purpose-built for photography. And there is also the matter of specialized optics that phones lack.

Even so, using a film camera isn’t very practical anymore. Film isn’t as easy to get developed as it used to be, and it also limits the number of shots you can take. Furthermore, it makes sharing your work digitally a huge pain. But now there is another option. A little device called the "I’m Back Roll APS-C" turns your favorite film cameras into digital cameras. You just insert a film-shaped gadget into the camera and you’re good to go.

Created by designer Samuel Mello Medeiros, the I’m Back Roll APS-C is essentially a self-contained digital camera system squeezed into the shape of a film cartridge. The module slides into the film chamber of compatible 35mm cameras and places a 26.1-megapixel Sony IMX571 APS-C sensor directly behind the lens. The camera body itself remains mechanically unchanged, preserving the experience that made classic cameras so beloved in the first place.

The system supports RAW and JPEG photography, 4K video recording, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity, and internal storage options ranging from 64GB to 256GB. Images can later be transferred wirelessly without ever removing the module from the camera. Rather than adding bulky external attachments, nearly everything fits inside the body, maintaining the clean look and handling of the original camera.

Shooting with the I’m Back Roll works much like using real film. Photographers compose shots through the optical viewfinder, manually adjust focus and exposure, and then trigger the digital sensor using either a tiny wireless remote or an optional synchronized shutter button.

The I’m Back Roll APS-C is currently available on Kickstarter with rewards starting around $460. You’ll have to hang in there a while before you can start snapping pictures, however — the first shipments aren’t expected to go out until August 2027.
