FreakLabs creates unique hardware specifically for wildlife applications. This can include but is not limited to animal tracking, environmental monitoring, and agricultural applications. Additionally, all products or projects that are designed are fully open source, available for anyone to recreate. Some past examples of this include audio triggers for camera traps, monitors for water levels, radiation monitoring, and GPS monitors.

The FreakLabs team consists of Chris Wang and Jacinta Plucinski. Wang has 25 years of circuit design experience and specializes in wireless sensor networks. On the other hand, Plucinski is a programmer specializing in Python and JavaScript. What's more, she is an author, runs her own book company, and has started her own magazine. Together, FreakLabs has recently begun a series of tutorials looking to help similar-minded individuals develop their technical skills.

Their most recent endeavor includes a five-part series detailing the design process for a wildlife logger. These will be approximately 20 minutes videos covering the specifications, choosing the parts for the hardware, the setup of design environments, programming of the devices, as well as the assembly and troubleshooting involved for completing the project.

The project that is going to be used as the topic for getting started with Arduino and is called the WildLogger. The unit is a field-deployable data logger that is meant to operate in remote locations for months at a time. As a result, the project will focus on power consumption management, data storage, and outline the process for choosing an appropriate enclosure to protect it from the weather as well as the wildlife themselves.
