Modern workspaces have long since traded the clack of typewriters for the glow of computer screens, but is this change for the better? Digital word processors undoubtedly offer us more speed and flexibility; unfortunately, they also introduce lots of digital noise. When a writer is in the zone, nothing shatters the creative flow faster than a work email or a social media notification.

Minimalistic, purpose-built digital writing devices have been introduced in recent years to give us the power of digital without the normal distractions. This is a step in the right direction, but why are these devices so, well — weird? They often take on strange form factors, like a tablet with a physical keyboard. Who actually wants to type on that for hours on end? Not me.

The Zerowriter Fold is a distraction-free E Ink word processor that is built like a typical laptop. Users flip the lid open and start typing just like they would on a traditional computer, with absolutely nothing to get in the way of their productivity. With an E Ink display, the battery life is exceptional, so writing sessions can continue as long as words are still flowing onto the page.

The machine uses a 6-inch E Ink display with integrated front lighting, allowing it to remain readable even in the dark while consuming very little power. According to the developers, the display is fast enough to eliminate the sluggish typing lag often associated with E Ink hardware. Combined with instant-on functionality and an estimated battery life of up to 100 hours, the device is perfectly suited for long, uninterrupted writing sessions.

The computer features a 61-key low-profile mechanical keyboard using Kailh Choc Pro Red switches, offering a typing feel closer to a premium mechanical desktop keyboard than a typical ultraportable laptop. The switches are also hot-swappable, giving writers the option to install quieter, clickier, or otherwise customized switches depending on personal preference.

Writers can switch between a distraction-free Drafting Mode that behaves like a continuously scrolling typewriter page and a more traditional Word Processing Mode with editing, copy-and-paste, and document navigation tools. Support for Markdown and Fountain syntax is built directly into the software, allowing bloggers and screenwriters to preview formatted output as they type.

Documents are stored on a microSD card, with USB-C file transfer support and QR code export for quickly sending text to a smartphone. The software itself is based on the open-source Zerowriter Core platform, which ensures long-term transparency and community-driven development.

The Zerowriter Fold is currently being funded through Kickstarter at a cost of $258. The next shipments are expected to go out in March 2027.
