Emo-tional Intelligence in Robots

Emo, a realistic robotic head, can predict human facial expressions before they occur and accurately reproduce them to build trust.

In recent years, there has been significant progress in the area of human-robot interaction, particularly with respect to verbal communication. This is due in large part to advancements in artificial intelligence, most notably large language models (LLMs). These sophisticated algorithms have given robots the ability to engage in meaningful conversations, understand context, and respond appropriately to a wide array of inquiries. As a result, robots are increasingly perceived as conversational partners rather than mere tools, greatly expanding their roles in a variety of applications, ranging from customer service to companionship.

However, effective communication extends well beyond words alone. Humans rely heavily on non-verbal cues such as facial expressions, body language, and tone of voice to interpret and convey emotions, intentions, and other social cues. When these cues are absent or unnatural in robot-human interactions, it can hinder the establishment of trust and rapport. Despite advancements in robotics, replicating these non-verbal cues authentically remains a significant challenge.

It has been noted in the past that when it comes to facial expressions, timing is a very important factor. When two individuals smile at the same time, for example, it can trigger feelings of mutual understanding and camaraderie. But when one individual has a delayed response, it can be seen as disingenuous, or a sign of submission. This has been a problem that has plagued human-robot interactions in the past, making for awkward and unnatural interactions.

Researchers at the Creative Machines Lab at Columbia University have been working to address these problems by building more realistic robots with greater levels of emotional intelligence. This has resulted in the development of a robotic head named Emo that is equipped with a highly expressive face and a pair of artificial intelligence algorithms. Together, these systems enable Emo to anticipate the emotions of a nearby human and accurately mimic their facial expressions without delay.

To accomplish this goal, the team had to deal with two challenging issues — on the one hand, Emo needed to have a highly expressive face that was capable of reproducing facial expressions without falling into the uncanny valley. On the other hand, the robot must be capable of detecting the early signs of a coming facial expression, like a smile, such that it has time to respond simultaneously with a human and not be seen as disingenuous.

In order to fulfill the first requirement, the robot was equipped with a set of 26 actuators that allow it to move in complex ways, ranging from fine movements of the face to tilting and rotating of the head. These actuators sit below a silicone skin that further adds to the realism of Emo.

The robot is also equipped with a pair of cameras hidden inside of the eyes. These feed images into a machine learning algorithm that was trained to recognize human emotions. Crucially, this algorithm notices fine movements that indicate that a facial expression is likely about to be made. This enabled the system to predict that a smile was coming almost a full second before it materialized.

This informed a second machine learning algorithm that was trained to control the robot’s actuators in such a way that it could accurately reproduce human facial expressions. The algorithm learned by watching itself make random actuator movements and seeing how they correlated with facial expressions. That enabled it to adjust each actuator in just the right way to mimic a human’s expressions.

Next up, the team plans to incorporate an LLM, like ChatGPT, into Emo. This integration would make for a robot that humans could interact and converse very naturally with.
