There’s a pretty good chance you’re reading this article while on a coffee break or lunch break at work. There’s an even better chance that your office is rarely at a temperature that’s comfortable for you. Maybe Jim over in marketing is always turning the air conditioning down to sub-zero temperatures, or Nancy in accounting seems to be trying to recreate the Sahara. Or, if your employer is like most, employees don’t even have any control over the thermostat at all.
We all find ourselves at least somewhat uncomfortable with the current temperature pretty frequently, often even in our own homes. Embr Wave, currently in the crowdfunding stage on Kickstarter, is promising to provide relief with a personal temperature-regulation wristband. The device, which looks like nothing more than a bulky wristwatch, either heats up or cools down at your command. When worn against the sensitive skin on your wrist, it’s supposed to trick your body into thinking your overall temperature (and comfort) has changed.
If you’re scoffing at the idea that this actually works, you’re not alone — we’re pretty skeptical ourselves. But, there is reason to believe that Embr Wave could work. Try putting an ice cube against the top of your wrist when you’re hot, or a hot cup of coffee when you’re cold. It does seem to have an effect, doesn’t it? Multiple reviewers have already spoken positively about it, including Digital Trends and Popular Science.
Further, investors seem to believe in the product: Embr Wave has secured investments from Bose Ventures and Intel Capital. The Kickstarter campaign, which lasts until October 27th, has already raised more than three times its goal. The first units, purchased on the extra-early bird special, are expected to start shipping in February of 2018.
