EInkTerminal Is the Hacker’s Perfect Companion
EInkTerminal is a Raspberry Pi-powered distraction-free Linux terminal with a rapid-refresh E Ink screen and a 20+ hour battery life.
A one-size-fits-all design might make sense for a poncho, but when it comes to computers there are as many different needs as there are users. This is a major reason why we see so many cyberdeck builds here at Hackster News. If nothing on the market quite matches their unique needs or taste, hackers do what hackers do and they make their own.
Redditor Least_Assumption5490’s EInkTerminal is a perfect example of this philosophy. The EInkTerminal was designed to be a distraction-free Linux terminal with a long battery life that can be comfortably used in direct sunlight. Just try to meet these requirements with an off-the-shelf laptop!
The device is powered by a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W single-board computer and uses a sizable, rapid-refresh E Ink display as the screen. A commercial keyboard and rechargeable battery round out the build. The hardware is installed in a custom, plastic clamshell case. Its appearance certainly won’t make anyone in Cupertino jealous, but it gets the job done and meets all of Least_Assumption5490’s requirements.
