The Prusa MK3, MK3S, and MK3+ were all very well-regarded and influential 3D printer models. They’re still reliable workhorses that many thousands of people around the world are happily using today, but they are now pretty long in the tooth. By modern standards, they’re a bit lacking in features. Many of those features were added with the release of the MK3.5 and MK3.5S and Prusa does offer an MK3S to MK3.5S upgrade kit. But if you’re looking for another option, the upcoming ReMIX35 looks like a great way to get MK3.5 features from a MK3+ or MK3S.

Prusa’s model naming scheme is a bit confusing, but we’ll try to keep things simple here. The ReMIX35 is an open source controller board upgrade for Prusa MK3+ and MK3S models, which provides features similar to the Prusa MK3.5. In fact, it even has 32-bit Einsy-derived electronics and is compatible with Prusa MK3.5 firmware. So, it should be a very easy plug-and-play kind of upgrade. That upgrade hardware includes the control board and a 3.5” full-color touchscreen display.

However, it is important to note that ReMIX35 is not compatible with the MMU3. If you use an MMU, you should not install the ReMIX35 hardware.

So, what does the ReMIX35 upgrade give you? Aside from the much nicer display and user interface, the biggest advantages are dramatically improved print speed and quality thanks to input shaping and pressure advance. Those are features that make a big difference and have become very popular in recent years, but they require the faster processing of the MK3.5, which is what the ReMIX35 provides.

According to the ReMIX35 campaign page copy, a 40% reduction in print time is entirely possible. Though, of course, that will depend on what you’re printing, as it is mostly the result of improved acceleration. Reliability should also improve, as the upgrades improve extrusion consistency and reduce clogging.

Information on price isn’t yet available, but it is certainly possible that the ReMIX35 upgrade kit could be more affordable than Prusa’s own MK3.5S upgrade kit. ReMIX35 is open source and users will be able to build their own hardware, or they can purchase a kit through Crowd Supply when the campaign launches.
