Digitron's WAP-01, the "Smallest Access Point and Repeater," Offers OpenWrt in a Compact Form Factor
For turning a wired Ethernet port into a wireless access point, repeater, or client, the WAP-01 could be a compact and cheap solution.
Communications specialist Digitron has launched what it claims is the "smallest access point and repeater," designed to convert any wired Ethernet socket into a wireless access point — and costing just $18.
"The [WallFi] WAP-01 is ideal for converting an existing wired Ethernet socket to a wireless access point," Digitron explains of its product. "It's equipped with a switching power supply that has an input range from 85VAC up to 265VAC. WallFi can also be powered through an RJ45 connector(PoE). An adjustable step down converter ensures stable power output regardless of the losses from long cables."
Based on an earlier product from the company, the WallFi in-wall access point and repeater, the WAP-01 is pared down to its bare minimum components and measures just 50x40x5mm (around 2x1.6x0.2"), not counting the height of the Ethernet port or the separate patch antenna.
Despite this, it packs an 802.11b/g/n Wi-FI radio, a single 10/100 Ethernet port, and can operate in access point, repeater, bridge, and client modes. The latter flexibility comes courtesy of the underlying software, the popular OpenWrt embedded Linux operating system — which includes a web interface for configuration.
The WAP-01 is available now priced at $18, including patch antenna, on Digitron's Tindie store.
