DEF CON is an annual computer security conference known for it’s lectures, workshops, and hacking contests and competitions. In recent years, it has also come to be known for the #BadgeLife, in which attendees construct or hack elaborate electronic conference badges. A lot of those are also professionally made, and are intended to be a challenge to hack themselves. One of the newest badges is Da Bomb, which you can buy in time for DEF CON 27 in August.
Da Bomb recently launched on Kickstarter, and has already exceeded its funding goal with 166 backers currently. It’s the brain child of John Adams, who also successfully Kickstarted The Ides of Defcon badge two years ago. Da Bomb has a completely new bomb-shaped design, and packs in tons of hackable hardware, features, and even a new game that was developed specifically for this badge by a AAA game designer.
The badge is controlled by a Rigado BMD340 microcontroller, which is based on the powerful Arm Cortex-M4F. The display is a 320x240 TFT touchscreen, and there is an onboard stereo amplifier and two speakers for audio. There are a total of 32 RGB LEDs for various status indicators and effects. It has built-in Bluetooth 5.0 for badge-to-badge matches in the Sea Battle game. The included 2000mAh LiPo battery and charging circuit make it rechargeable. And, of course, there are hidden secrets for you to crack at DEF CON.
If you want Da Bomb badge, the Kickstarter campaign will be running until April 17th. A single assembled badge will cost you $120, and you can choose to have it shipped to you or to pick it up at DEF CON. Those of you who choose to have it shipped should receive your badges in July.
