Cyclists Can Ride in Confidence with SODAQ’s Portable Air Quality Monitor

Air quality has regressed over the past decade, resulting in health risks and diseases. With that in mind, humans should know more about the air quality when they’re on the move. Now, SODAQ developed the SODAQ AIR, a handlebar-mounted device that measures the air quality in the area and informs the users of any changes. It can be used as a stationary sensor or mounted to a cyclists’ bike, allowing them to acquire real-time data, which can be accessed through an online map for future travels. Anyone interested in this unit can place a pledge, although prices vary, depending on the early bird option.

The SODAQ AIR features integrated sensors to measure particle matter (PM 1.0, 2.5, and 10), humidity, and temperature every ten seconds. Each hour, this data transmits to a global air quality map via LTE-M and NarrowBand IoT networks. By accessing this map, users can check the air quality on their bike route, around the world, or even in a local area. This is achieved with a unique identifier code connected to their device, allowing users to stay anonymous. The temperature sensor can show cities’ temperature patterns, which could be used to detect heat islands and indicate areas that cause heat stress.

Not only that, but the SODAR AIR also measures air pollution in a users’ home, garden, or workplace when they’re not riding their bike. Even better, the device doesn’t rely on a battery to operate. Instead, it uses a supercapacitor, which runs for eight hours and takes two hours to charge via USB-C. No matter how the SODAQ AIR is being implemented, it notifies the user of air quality changes through the LED strip alternating between green, yellow, and red. It also includes an accelerometer that automatically turns the device on and off so cyclists won’t have to worry about pushing a button.
