CrowPi2 Is a Raspberry Pi Laptop and STEM Education Platform
The all-in-one device comes with built-in lessons for learning Scratch, Python, Minecraft, and AI.
Back in 2018, Hong Kong electronics manufacturer Elecrow released the CrowPi, a kit that helps you learn the basics of programming, electronics, computer science and Raspberry Pi. Now, they’re introducing the next iteration of the device with the CrowPi2.
CrowPi2 looks like an ordinary laptop, but it’s packed with the software, modules, and components needed for STEM education. Similar to its first iteration, the CrowPi2 is equipped with Raspberry Pi and various other educational computer components. It’s based on the latest version of Raspberry Pi and comes installed with software and built-in lessons for learning Scratch, Python, Minecraft, and AI. It also includes multiple open-sourced games that help you learn more about computers and programming.
Featuring 22 types of sensors and modules, the CrowPi2 aims to give you a hands-on STEM educational experience. Made for all ages, it provides you with the tools you need to play games, create your own circuit boards, learn facial recognition, program for Arduino, and create animations.
The unit integrates a 11.6" 1920x1080 IPS screen, 2MP camera, microphone, and stereo output. Fairly better than a lot of laptops I’ve seen. It even comes with a mouse and wireless keyboard that detaches from the body or stay connected with a magnet. By removing the keyboard reveals different sensors, LEDs, a breadboard and a joystick, among other components that can be used for educational purposes.
The CrowPi2 is compatible with various operating systems, including Arch, Raspbian, FreeBSD, LibreELEC and Ubuntu. And though it’s based on the latest version of Raspberry Pi, it supports older versions like the 3B+ and 3B as well. Beyond that, the system ships with two microSD cards: one loaded with custom software and educational applications and game emulation software RetroPie on the other. Having the programs on microSD cards lets you quickly switch between gaming and learning.
The CrowPi2 is currently available on Kickstarter. There are various kits to choose from, each featuring different accessories such as atools, game controllers, remotes, and motors. Kits start at $169. Elecrow is aiming to deliver orders to backers in August.
