Landing a dream job is more difficult than most people think. Sure, there are the obvious steps to take, like getting the right degree and building up some experience in the field. But that’s not all there is to it. What everyone eventually comes to find out is that there are lots of other people with similar backgrounds who appear to be equally well-suited for the job on paper. So if you want your name to rise to the top of the list, you have to find a way to make yourself stand out from the crowd.

A recently launched Kickstarter campaign is offering a product that promises to do exactly that. Called Vidcard, this product is a new take on business cards. Rather than simply showing one’s name and contact information, and perhaps links to personal websites, printed on a paper card, a Vidcard instead plays a personalized video on its 5-inch LCD screen that is used as an introduction. Whether or not this will help anyone land a job remains to be seen, but there is little doubt that it will make a lasting impression.

Each Vidcard is under 5 mm thick and is equipped with a 1280x720-pixel IPS LCD display. A full charge of the onboard battery takes about 30 minutes, which is sufficient to replay the video more than 100 times. There is 256 MB of storage, which isn’t a lot, but it is sufficient to store about 90 seconds of video. Vidcard is also capable of communicating via NFC or a QR code to share the owner’s contact information.

A companion phone app has been designed to upload videos to the Vidcard and link it to your personal account. This linking process ensures that an NFC tap will send users to a landing page with your personal information. Real-time metrics on visits to this landing page are available to the Vidcard owner via the app.

Rewards for this campaign start at $59, which makes Vidcard almost 1,200 times more expensive than a typical paper business card, so you don’t exactly want to be handing these out like candy on Halloween. The developer suggests just sharing the card for long enough to watch the video in most cases. Of course, they can also be permanently given out in special cases. That may be a bit extravagant, but if it helps you land your dream job, it could be a good investment.
