Computer Atelier Keegan McNamara Builds "Beautiful, Serene" Systems From Wood and Leather

With swooping curves and unusual features, like an integrated thermal printer, there's nothing quite like a Mythic Computer.

Self-styled "computer atelier" Keegan McNamara has put together a "serene computer" for a friend, constructed from wood and leather — and is hoping to turn it into a business for those who need something bespoke on their desk.

"A friend wanted a beautiful, serene computer," McNamara explains of the origins of his newly-formed company, the Mythic Computer Co. "He couldn't find one, so I made one for him." The resulting design is nothing short of eye-catching, built from hardwood with leather accents and with features rarely seen in desktops of the day — such as a compact thermal printer hidden in the side.

"[The] hardware [is made up of] carefully selected electromechanical parts, full-grain Italian leather, and hardwood," McNamara writes of his designs. "[The] software [is] customized — whatever you need for a serene experience. Nothing more, nothing less."

The surprisingly deep chassis of the system comes down from the monitor in a swooping curve, looking like something that may have come out of the early days of the Porsche Design Studio. The front is raised above the desk, housing a mechanical keyboard with a leather-covered wrist rest — and the display, which like the rest of the system is trimmed in wood. Chunky connectors and shiny chrome buttons and switches finish the build, with customizable functions.

While McNamara is looking to produce more of the systems than the two he has already designed, and is open to taking orders through the Mythic Computer Co., interested parties are advised to temper their expectations in terms of pricing and delivery schedule: "Mythic Computer Co. is a one-man atelier," he explains. "Each Mythic Computer takes months to create, and is priced accordingly."

More information is available on the Mythic Computer Co. website.
