While modern electronics have improved media consumption in ways that would have been unheard of 20 years ago, antique vacuum tube based amplifiers are still prized for their unique audio characteristics. If you listen to music using headphones, the Ceres Hybrid Tube Amp — now on Kickstarter — presents an interesting option.

The basic version allows you to connect a standard 3.5mm plug as an input, amplifying this sound using a single tube, as well as a MOSFET output stage.

A second version can act as a Raspberry Pi DAC, streaming audio from a connected board to your headphones or to a powered set of speakers.

Looks-wise, the device features a clear acrylic case and an aluminum volume knob, making for a design that shows off the internal components nicely.

You can find more details and back Ceres on Kickstarter.
