If you have to get up for work, class, or just to say you got out of bed on a certain day, one of your first instincts is to head to the kitchen and groggily procure breakfast. For normal people, this means reaching to find a box of cereal along with milk, then pouring everything into a bowl, just as they did in the long-gone 20th century.

If, however, you happen to be Kevin Obermann or Adrian Bernhart, you can let your Cereal Distribution Machine, or “CDM,” do all work for you. This device takes the form of a moving table, which rotates four cereal containers into place above your bowl with a stepper motor and gear assembly. Once in place, one of four dispensing servo motors turns a serving paddle wheel, allowing the appropriate type and amount of food to drop into your bowl.

The system uses an ESP32 module for onboard control, and the user interface is handled via a nicely animated Android app — written using the open source DynamicStackAdapter library.

You can see CDM in action in the video below. The users are pouring their own milk there, however this is no longer a problem, as they’ve since upgraded the machine with a peristaltic pump for automatic milk dispensing!
