CANdash Hacks a Dash Cluster Into the Tesla Model 3

CANdash is an Android app that turns your device into an information cluster for your Tesla.

For anyone unsatisfied with the stripped-down dash of the Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, which forego a traditional dash cluster in favor of a single central console screen, CANdash hacks together a dash cluster with all the data you could wish for. CANdash is an Android app that turns your device into an information cluster for your Tesla, which has a sophisticated onboard computer sending many signals not visible to the driver. By snooping the Tesla’s CAN bus, it is able to display everything from speed to remaining range in the battery to coolant temperature and even add capabilities like live blind-spot monitoring. Plus, it is fully compatible with Android split-screen, allowing your new dash to display alongside your favorite navigation app.

The app’s build utilizes a CANserver — an ESP32-based device built for hooking up to the CAN bus on Tesla vehicles — to pipe the data to an Android phone where it can be displayed. The CANserver is quick and simple to install, and safe to use. It cannot send any messages to the car, it can only read information the car is already sending. With the CANserver installed, a phone with the CANdash app can connect to the CANserver wifi and begin displaying data.

The end result can be seen in this video on designer Nick Nguyen’s YouTube channel, while more detailed documentation and setup information is available on GitHub. The only known issue at the moment is an occasional pause in displaying speed data.

With a dashboard clip, wireless charging mount, or custom-printed case, you can mount your phone behind the wheel exactly where you would normally read dash information. CANdash can currently be downloaded from Google Play, or you can hack your own version by finding it on GitHub for a truly custom driving experience.
