The Z80 processor was introduced to the world in 1976, and found its way into the home computer market of the late 1970s and early 1980s. It also survived in such classics as the Nintendo Game Boy and Sega Genesis, and can even be found today in the TI-84 calculator and other applications.
Understandably, hacker dekuNukem had to make his own computer based on this processor, and as it uses a FPGA for the video card, he named it the FAP-80 for “FPGA Assisted Processor.”
The build started out with ‘Nukem simply buying “a bunch of parts” since he knew more or less what he wanted out of the computer. He proceeded to install them on a custom motherboard, along with all the other “little details” that go along with creating your own custom computer from parts!
It’s quite an impressive feat of hacking, and you can see more about it on Imgur. For even more details, check out ‘Nukem’s blog or the project’s GitHub repository.
