Remember those flip-dot displays listing departure times at airports and train stations back in the day? Well, Brooklyn-based hardware firm BREAKFAST has brought them back to life in the form of a kinetic screen for businesses.
Their innovative system features 17" x 17" modular panels with 784 half-inch Flip-Discs, enabling advertisers and stores to configure any size screen they’d like using out-of-the-box software. The Flip-Discs, along with their casing, can be customized in specific colors as well.
What’s even more impressive is that the Flip-Discs can operate at close to 30 frames per second, all controlled by an accompanying app that gives users creative freedom.
According to the team, the system’s software is capable of showing video files along with static images and text, which can also be interacted with via a 3D depth camera. Beyond that, an integrated scheduler lets you program certain things at a specific times, while developers can use its API to push custom content directly to the screen.
If BREAKFAST sounds familiar, that’s because you may recall one of their earlier projects, particularly the F21 Thread Screen from 2015.
