While we’ve seen a plethora of projects using RGB LEDs here at Hackster, few compare to the scope of hacker bitluni’s latest display. His setup — which uses a total of 1,200 ws2811 LEDs — is so large, in fact, that it was designed in four pieces for transportation. When assembled, it measures in at 2 x 1.5m — 6 ½ x almost 5 feet — and was quite a hit at the Maker Faire in Hanover in Germany.
Actually assembling such a monstrosity involved creating 1,200 holes to accommodate the LEDs, and rather than drill all of them himself, bitluni came up with a clever punch system that we profiled in this earlier post. During this rather involved build, he came up with a few ‘upgrades,’ including using an exercise band attached to the ceiling to pull the lever back, and vise grips as an enhanced handle.
The device uses an ESP32 module to provide the memory needed for this massive display, also giving it wireless abilities. Bitluni has implemented a streaming mode for media, and it can even be used with an ESP Camera for live images, though this appears to be something of an experimental feature as of now.
It’s a brilliant project, both in its design and scope, so be sure to check it out in the video above. The time-lapse sequence around 7:15 is especially entertaining, where he puts everything together with the LED lights blinking away at the same time!
